The Worldwide Aviation Support Services (WASS) program, an AAR business, headquartered in Rockledge, FL, provides global, world-class expeditionary and conventional aviation solutions to the US Department of State Air Wing.

Role Description:

The WASS program offers a dynamic environment of collaboration, fun, and Safety Always! We are seeking an Aviation Safety Manager to be responsible for the development, operation, and continuous improvement of the safety management system, SMS, at the DOS Air Wing. Monitor the effectiveness of SMS at each site, initiate corrective actions when necessary and provide safety reports on SMS performance on a periodic basis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide safety advice to top management and propose corrective actions on safety related issues as needed.

  • Ensure safety-related documentation and records are available and up to date.

  • Responsible and accountable for providing effective support to aviation safety specialists and line managers to ensure the success of the safety management efforts.

  • Identify and monitor safety and environmental hazards, risks, and promote the reduction or elimination of potentially hazardous conditions that may lead to accidents, occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and safety-related financial losses.

  • Coordinate all safety-related activities within the requirements of the safety program with respect to mission requirements and the U.S. Government directives to ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Report and investigate aircraft, ground safety, and environmental accidents to determine the cause of the accident and formulate recommendations to help prevent similar mishaps in the future.

  • Detailed data-entry of technical information necessary in assisting in the monitoring of mishap reports to ensure accuracy and completeness.

  • Extensive research dealing with OSHA and environmental regulations, vendor information, and logistical support for safety equipment and supplies.

  • Ensure proper industrial safety procedures are followed in accordance with the contract and appropriate Federal, state, and local regulations, rules, and procedures.

  • Provide administrative support including maintaining all departmental files, records, and publications needed to support organizational activities and to meet U.S. Department of State, Office of Aviation, Bureau for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement requirements.

  • Provide written reports which are clear, concise, and meaningful for all ground and aviation safety and environmental matters.

  • Provide technical support in all types of Safety and Environmental issues such as data gathering, training, correspondence with CONUS and OCONUS internal customers, etc.

  • Develop required reports, conduct briefings, safety training, and when directed conduct quarterly safety and semiannual safety stand down meetings.

  • Assist in maintaining accident and incident records, files, and reports. Requires data entry and corrections to files on an as needed basis.

  • Conduct safety audits and inspections of safety related equipment as needed.

  • Process Safety Hazard Reports include investigating the hazard and ensuring mitigations are in place.

  • Conduct other tasks as identified by the Director of Safety.

  • Perform duties as an active member of an aircraft accident board, when needed.

  • Coordinate first responder duties during an onsite accident, when needed.

  • Performs routine OCONUS travel and within CONUS travel as required.

  • Travel may be required for training/education.

Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or educational equivalent.

  • Position requires a U.S. security clearance.

  • Previous US military or other US agency flight experience equivalent FAA Commercial and Instrument Airman's Certificate, any category or class.

  • Required Completion of a Department of Defense, US Military Aviation Safety Officers Course or equivalent FAA, NTSB or accredited university training containing Aviation Law, Human Factors, Aviation Safety Program Management, Risk Mitigation, Aircraft Accident Investigators courses with experience desired in OSHA, EPA, Hazardous Materials-Waste Storage, handling, and disposal procedures.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an Aviation Safety Officer-Manager.

  • FAA Commercial Pilots License Instrument, with at least 1,500 hours of aircraft flight time.

  • Experience in risk management and mitigation.

  • Position requires the ability to obtain/maintain a U.S. security clearance.
